What’s New Now

As of June 25, 2026, Unusable Engineering adds four new plugins to the lineup for macOS and Windows and brings the full line to 14 plugins.

The main release is Partials & Discrepancies, a new 8-voice additive polysynth built around a faster and more visual way of working with partials. Instead of presenting additive synthesis as a long technical list, it is built around a control model that makes it easier to shape, offset, warp, and animate groups of partials quickly.

Alongside it, the launch also adds Binaural Modulator, Geometry Delay, and Geometry Reverb, expanding the line further into spatial and movement-based effects.

Launch highlights

What Makes The Line Distinct

  • Unusual internal engines: many plugins are built around simulation-based or non-standard systems where behavior is the key feature.
  • Direct interfaces: no extra pages or hidden layers. What you see is what you get.
  • Limited by choice: these are focused tools, not stretched to cover every possible use case.
  • Built for exploration: immediate controls and visual feedback leave room for happy accidents.

Company background
Rasmus Nyåker of Unusable Engineering

I started building these plugins because I wanted music software to feel rewarding again.

A lot of software is impressive in ways I can respect, but not always enjoyable to use. Once things turn into pages, hidden functions, and long option trees, I often end up stepping through presets instead of interacting with the tool.

What I missed was the feeling of focused hardware in the studio: a clear purpose, a clear surface, visual feedback, and a sense that something interesting can happen when you push it.

That is where Unusable Engineering comes from. These are focused tools with unusual internal behavior, direct controls, and limitations chosen on purpose. The point is not to cover every possible task. It is to make tools that are quick to grasp, inspiring to use, and capable of leading somewhere interesting.

Unusable Engineering is a Danish developer of software instruments and effects. The plugins are built around unusual internal engines, direct interfaces, and focused design choices intended to keep the creative process playful, clear, and rewarding.
