News post announcing four new Unusable Engineering plugins are live

New products alert

A bigger batch this time.

Four new plugins are now live for Mac and Windows:

  • Partials & Discrepancies
  • Binaural Modulator
  • Geometry Delay
  • Geometry Reverb

The main one, at least to me, is Partials & Discrepancies.

Partials & Discrepancies

Partials & Discrepancies is a new 8-voice polysynth built around a single additive oscillator per voice, with up to 128 partials.

In some ways it is a sibling of Curves & Membranes, but in other ways it is its opposite. Where Curves & Membranes is narrower, more focused, and pretty stable, Partials & Discrepancies is much more open to movement, disagreement, and odd behaviour between voices.

The whole thing is built around slot-based motion and a discrepancy system that lets each voice drift and diverge in controlled ways. It can move from harmonic and simple sounds into dissonance, instability, and stranger timbral territory, and then back again.

It is not quite as immediate as Curves & Membranes, but I think I have managed to make an additive polysynth where you can actually follow what is going on. You can read the voices, follow the movement, and get into fairly complex sound territory without it turning into total abstraction.

The main thing I wanted was to make additive synthesis available through an interface and control layer that feels fun to work with instead of just technically impressive. For me, that part is working. It is quick, wide, surprising, and capable of a lot more range than the structure might first suggest.

Binaural Modulator

Binaural Modulator is a spatial modulation effect built around a simple room model with a fixed listener and movable sound-source nodes.

That may sound more complicated than it really is. In practice it can work as an auto-panner, tremolo, rotating-speaker style effect, and even a rough kind of chorus depending on how it is set up.

It is one of those plugins where the basic idea is simple, but once you start moving the nodes and modulating them, it opens up quite a lot.

Geometry Delay

Geometry Delay is a multi-tap delay built around a room abstraction.

Each tap is basically a wall, floor, or ceiling in the room, and the position of the listening node determines the delay times. Move the node and all the taps move with it. That also means you get pitch movement from Doppler effect when the node is in motion.

The point with it was mainly to make multi-tap delay more immediate, more visual, and more fun to explore without having to sit and set up individual taps for half a day.

Geometry Reverb

Geometry Reverb comes from some of the same spatial thinking as Geometry Delay, but pushed into reverb instead.

Out of the three effects in this batch, this is probably the one most current users should pay attention to first, because it is free for all existing paying customers, and also for anyone buying a paid plugin or bundle now.

So this one is basically my little extra thank-you.

It is still built around a room idea, but aimed more at creating spaces that can move from fairly readable into less sensible territory without turning into total chaos. Like the rest of the lineup, the point is to keep it direct and visual instead of hiding everything behind pages and menus.

If you already own a paid plugin or bundle, Geometry Reverb should be waiting for you on your account page together with the rest of your downloads. Remember to grab the license too.

Crossgrades

The account page now also includes crossgrade offers for anyone who already owns a paid plugin or bundle. This has been on my to do list for a while, but with the new launch I could not postpone it anymore. There should be offers available for anyone who has made a purchase in the past.

As I mentioned, there are a lot of offer combinations, and I have not had the chance to test every possible ownership combination, so if something looks wrong on your account page, or a crossgrade does not work as expected, just send me an email and I will sort it out.

Release

All four plugins are live now for Mac and Windows. Remember to check your account page for the best offer.

I have also been putting together walkthrough videos with some sound demos on the respective product pages, and there will be more videos with sound examples and functionality deep-dives pretty soon.

Thanks again for the support.

All the best,

Rasmus Nyåker
